The short answer
Ask the seller for four things before paying: the metal, how the bowl was made (hand-forged or cast/spun), its exact weight, and a recording of it being struck and rimmed. A seller who can't provide these is selling a decoration, not an instrument.
Know what the metal is
Marketplace listings often say "seven metal", "panchdhatu" or just "metal". Those labels can't be checked. Bell metal (kansa) is a defined copper-tin bronze. Read what bell metal is and bell metal vs "seven metal".
Hand-forged or machine-made?
Hand-hammered bowls show irregular hammer marks and slight variation in wall thickness. Cast or spun bowls look uniform and often ring shorter. See handmade vs machine-made singing bowls.
Ask for the weight, not just the diameter
Two bowls of the same diameter can differ a lot in weight, thickness and sound. Weight also tells you what you're paying for metal. Our size guide and size, weight and pitch pages explain the link.
Ask for an unedited sound recording
Ask for a phone video of one strike, recorded until the sound fully fades, plus a rimming clip. Compare against how long a bowl should sustain.
Check the price logic
A hand-forged bell-metal bowl can't sell for a few hundred rupees; the metal alone costs more. See singing bowl price in India.
Shipping, packing and returns
Bowls can dent or crack if packed loosely. Confirm padding, transit insurance and the return policy before ordering. Ours is on the shipping and returns page.
